Behaviour change training programme for Scotland's active travel officers

Our training programme equipped staff across Scotland's 32 local authorities with essential behaviour change skills, boosting their effectiveness in designing and delivering impactful active travel interventions across the country

We were recruited by Paths for All, Scotland's national walking charity, to develop and deliver a behaviour change training programme for local authority staff involved in active travel initiatives across the country.

Our behaviour change training was tailored to address travel-related behavioural shifts. Over two days, participants learned how to collect behavioural data, develop strategies, and craft effective marketing communications. The programme also included practical sessions on delivering and evaluating active travel projects, helping to improve the effectiveness of their interventions.

We provided a comprehensive guide on implementing successful active travel projects and developed an online resource hub for ongoing support and knowledge sharing. Beyond the training, our team offered hands-on mentoring to assist local authority teams in applying behaviour change principles to their projects. This approach ensured practical application of the strategies learned.

Both Paths for All and local authority teams reported enhanced focus and effectiveness in designing, delivering, and evaluating their behaviour change interventions. The training strengthened their technical skills and confidence in managing complex behaviour change projects.

For organisations looking to strengthen their approach to behaviour change, our training equips you with in-depth knowledge and the practical tools to deliver successful interventions, ensuring you have a solid foundation to work towards active travel, or other behaviour change, outcomes. SMG provided an invaluable training programme to Active Travel officers across Scotland’s 32 local authorities, helping many of them adopt a much more customer oriented and behaviour change focus on planning and delivering our funded projects. It continues to realise impact, including new staff not exposed to the initial training.
