MECC skills training and e-learning development for a London borough

Delivering Making Every Contact Count (MECC) training to 500+ people in London Borough of Waltham Forest. Our courses were tailored to local health issues and we developed a bespoke e-learning package to enhance staff and volunteers' skills.

SMG Learning was commissioned by the London Borough of Waltham Forest to deliver MECC training, enhancing the skills of staff and volunteers in addressing health and wellbeing issues within the local community.

We have delivered over 50 Making Every Contact Count (MECC) sessions, reaching more than 500 participants from the Council, the voluntary sector, the Metropolitan Police Service, and primary care services.

The training programme was tailored to address specific health priorities in Waltham Forest, providing local signposting information; this included behaviour change training focused on alcohol and drug-taking behaviours. We also developed a bespoke e-learning package for both council and voluntary sector staff.

With our support, Waltham Forest has established an active MECC practitioners’ network that hosts regular meetings, aiming to cascade MECC practice and embed these essential skills into the culture of the council and its partners.

Our collaboration with Waltham Forest has evolved into another phase of training, which includes ongoing monitoring of e-learning progress and the practitioners’ network, as well as providing periodic refresher training sessions.

For me, the training managed to convey the message that MECC is about having “good conversations" which are satisfying to both parties. I also liked that it was so relevant covering the issues the people in Waltham Forest have currently.
